The world of eco textiles & fashion is diverse, participative and compelling.

It's also complex, global and highly polluting.

Converting fibres to garments, furnishings, carpets (etc) requires energy, water, chemicals and land. It also releases considerable waste and emissions, most significantly, to water. Follow these links for some ‘hotspots’ in the production of cotton, polyester and wool.

Yet focusing on what happens in production is only part of the story. What happens as a garment is manufactured, transported, used and finally thrown away?

The textile lifecycle is not just about pollution and waste, it is also about ethical standards, trade, washing habits, what makes you use something for a long or short time and what happens to it when you throw it away.

Eco textiles is about resource flows and quality of life. It’s also about fashion, politics, consumption, feeling empowered and being creative. Make sure you see the whole picture!
